Celebrate Cabernet Day Around the World
On September 2nd, 2010 wineries and vino lovers will celebrate Cabernet Sauvignon. The 24 hour event begins in Australia and will celebrate the bold, aromatic wine that so many of us adore. Vineyards and wine bars have events scheduled and everyone is encouraged to tweet about the Cabernet they’re enjoying.
One of my favorite Cabernet wines is by Duckhorn Vineyard Estates in California. They produce exquisite, dark and fruity Cabernet wines and I’m anxious to try the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon from the Candlestick Vineyard in Napa Valley.
Residents of Polaris Crossing apartments can enjoy this wonderful bottle at Vino Vino in Columbus. They’re located on Grandview Avenue and owned by the same couple who owns the popular restaurant Figlio. If you can’t make it out tonight to celebrate Cabernet Day with friends, pick up your favorite bottle and enjoy in the comfort of your spacious home.
Sweet Tooth Saturday
Saturday’s are a great day to stroll around Short North Arts District, taking in the shops and galleries. Top the afternoon off with a sweet treat from Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream or Bakery Gingham. Both are chef owned by local women who are passionate about culinary arts.
The art district is about 25 minutes south of Polaris Crossing Apartments. After browsing and eating, relax at Goodale Park for some smooth Latin Jazz at the 2010 Music Series.
Feel the Chill With a Iced Mocha
Paula Deen recently posted an excellent list of her top ten summer drinks. One that caught my eye was the Mama’s Iced Mocha recipe. It’s so simple to make and who doesn’t love the combination of coffee, chocolate and brown sugar. She suggest using chocolate milk but to make it a little healthier I chose to use chocolate almond milk instead.
If you’re out with friends and decide you’d love an ice cold mocha, stop by Heavenly Cup Espresso on State Street in Westerville. They serve excellent mochas and if you’re in the mood, relax at a table for a friendly board game. They have friendly, knowledgeable baristas who whip up seasonal and custom drinks. If you’re adventurous, try adding a syrup to your mocha or even a splash of coconut milk. Let me know what concoction you create.
Healthy Chocolate Chip Muffins
Is it possible to have chocolate and healthy in the same sentence? Yes, it is a reality and Jenny of Picky Palate has created a hearty recipe for banana peanut butter chocolate chip muffins! I know, it’s a mouthful but you’ll enjoy these delicious muffins for a nutritious breakfast or snack.
These sweet little treats are made with a combination of all purpose and whole wheat flour. If you prefer to substitute you can but I love the earthy flavor added by the whole wheat flour. She also adds coconut as a sweet topping but suggest making some without for those who are not fans of shredded coconut. No matter what you’ll enjoy these scrumptious muffins!
Chipotle Lime Pulled Chicken
There is nothing like a slow roasted hen for infused flavors and taste. This chipotle lime pulled chicken recipe from Tasty Kitchen is moist and delicious. In fact it’s a favorite because I can let it cook all day in the crock pot, come home from work and it’s ready for a scrumptious meal. If you prefer, serve it over a bed of Mexican rice or wrap it in a flour tortilla for burrito night. There are so many options with this recipe so have fun and get creative! If you want to pair it with a nice cold beer, try a blond or gold ale.

Yummiest Breakfast Casserole Ever!
I have been making this breakfast recipe for years and it’s especially easy and delicious! Let me know what you think!
Sausage and Egg Morning Casserole
1 packaged mild sausage (cooked, drained and crumbled)
4 cups cubed day old bread
2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
10 eggs, slightly beaten
4 cups milk
1 tsp. dry mustard
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. onion powder
Fresh ground pepper to tast
1/2 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
1/2 cup peeled, chopped tomatoes (optional)
Place bread in well-buttered 9 x13 baking dish. Sprinkle with cheese. Combine eggs, milk, dry mustard, salt, onion powder, pepper. Pour evenly over the bread and cheese. Sprinkle sausage and optional ingredients over the top. I like to add more cheese! Cover and chill overnight. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Bake uncovered for about one hour. Tent with foil if top begins to brown too quickly. Serves 6-8 people.
