The Old Bag of Nails Pub…A Great Fish Story

Named after his great-Uncle Gaylord, Gaylord Wirrick, named his eatery The Old Bag of Nails because his first pub was in an empty hardward store.  With 11 locations spread out all over Ohio, this restaurant is reminiscent of an old English pub with its brewery memorabilia adorning the walls and the collection of beer cans.

The Old Bag of Nails has an outstanding selection of beer and wine is coming soon.  The fare is typical of an English pub with Appetizers like the Onion Ring Basket (served with a horseradish dipping sauce), Mussels and Shrimp (over 1 lb of  mussels with jumbo shrimp, steamed in white wine, butter, spices and served with garlic toast), or choose the Beer Battered Pickles (YUM!).

A variety of soups and salads offer up your serving of vegies. Try the French Onion Soup…delicious!  Seafood and steaks, 14 different sandwiches, 6 cooked to order burger suggestions, plus Quesadillas and mini burgers. There is also a kid’s menu. The desserts are amazing! Try the Homemade Bread Pudding a la Mode or my favorite is the  Famous House Made Carrot Cake.

However, I saved the absolute best until last. This is my “Chocolate”. If you go to this restaurant and don’t order the Fish and Chips, you are not of sound mind. Belly up to the table, pour a glass of ale and dig into your basket of cold water Alaskan Fish served with steak fries, coleslaw and tartar sauce! Lip smackin’ good. Pour me another one, bartender! If you don’t fancy the fish, then order the Shrimp and Chips or the Scallops and Chips. The Fisherman’s Platter is a delicious assortment of their famous fish, hand-battered scallops and shrimp, served  up with coleslaw and steak fries.

The pricing is reasonable and you can’t beat the portions. Way more than I could eat in one meal so I took home a “doggie” bag. This is a great place to hang out with friends or impress an out-of-town guest with a bit of old English nostalgia.
