In 1991, The Dave Matthews Band formed in Charlottesville, Virginia,, when vocalist/guitarist, Dave Matthews, decided to put some songs he had written on tape. Instead of simply recording himself with a guitar, he decided to bring in some additional help to give his music more depth. Ultimately, he found instrumental assistance  in drummer, Carter Beauford, and saxophonist, LeRoi Moore, who were both accomplished jazz musicians in the local Charlottesville area. After talking with a distinguished local jazz guru, John D’earth, Dave decided to bring on 16-year-old musical prodigy, Stefan Lessard, to play bass. Completing the band was keyboard player, Peter Griesar, who left the band after a couple of years, as well as the talented and classically trained violinist, Boyd Tinsley.

The first public performance of Dave Matthews Band was held at the City of Charlottesville’s Earth Day Festival in April 1991. The first official gig for the Dave Matthews Band was May 11, 1991, at a private party held on the rooftop of the pink warehouse on South Street in downtown Charlottesville.

From this point on, their fan base grew by leaps and bounds until ultimately in Summer/Fall 2003, DMB launched their first solo projects with the release of Boyd’s “True Reflections” and Dave’s “Some Devil”. The first single from “Some Devil”, entitled “Gravedigger,” earned Dave a Grammy Award for “Best Male Rock Vocal Performance”.

In August of 2008, Dave Matthews Band suffered the devastating loss of brother and founding band member, LeRoi Moore, who passed away on August 19, 2008 from complications stemming from a June ATV accident.  While the band mourned the loss of LeRoi, they soldiered on. After a break, the remaining band members traveled to a New Orleans studio to complete work on their next studio album, Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King, which was released on June 2, 2009.
